Cagliari

Cagliari is the capital city of the island of Sardinia. It is an ancient city with a long history. The city is rich in culture, education, politics and art. Cagliari is known for its diverse Art Nouveau architecture and several monuments. It is also economic and industrial hub of Sardinia, having one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean Sea and an international airport (Cagliari-Elmas Airport). Cagliari's main beach is the Poetto, which stretches for around nine kilometres, from Sella del Diavolo (the Devil's Saddle) up to the coastline of Quartu Sant'Elena. Another smaller beach is that of Calamosca near the Sant'Elia district. Also, Cagliari is close to other beautiful seaside locations, including Maddalena Beach, Chia and Villasimius. The old part of the city (Castello) lies on top of a hill with a wonderful view of the Gulf of Cagliari. Most of the city walls are intact and feature two 13th century white limestone towers (St. Pancras Tower and the Elephant Tower). Other monuments in Cagliari include the Cathedral, Sardinian Archaeological Museum, Basilica of San Saturnino, Chiesa della Purissima, Sanctuary of Bonaria and the Orto Botanico dell'Universita di Cagliari.
