About Sicily
After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century, Sicily often changed hands and it has been ruled by the Arabs, Normans and Spain, to name but a few! The Kingdom of Sicily lasted between 1130 and 1816, when it was briefly teamed with Naples. However, in 1860, it was finally unified with the rest of Italy and it currently holds a special status as an autonomous region.
Sicily has a rich and unique culture, which sets it apart from the rest of Italy. Art, music, literature, cuisine and architecture all have strong positions in Sicily life and the island also hosts some of the most important archeological sites, such as the Necropolis of Pantalica, the Valley of the Temples and Selinunte.
Did you know..?
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea but, be warned, temperatures in August can reach 30 degrees Celsius and beyond!
