Syracuse

Syracuse (Italian: Siracusa) is a historic city in south east Sicily, by the Gulf of Syracuse. The city is notable for its rich Greek history, culture, architecture and amphitheatres. Syracuse is also known as the birthplace of the pre-eminent engineer and mathematician Archimedes. This city is over 2,700-years old and was regarded as one of the major powers of the Mediterranean world in ancient times. The city was founded by Ancient Greek Corinthians. Once described by Cicero as "the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all", it later became part of the Roman Republic and Byzantine Empire. After this Palermo overtook it in importance, as the capital of Sicily. The city is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site along with the Necropolis of Pantalica.
