Siena

Siena lies 30 km south of Florence in the Tuscany region. The historic centre of Siena is one of Italy's most visited attractions and has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. It is famous for its art, museums, cuisine, medieval architecture and the Palio, a popular horse race, which takes place twice a year in the main square Piazza del Campo ("il Campo"). Also located here is the Palazzo Pubblico, the public palace, which dates back to 1250 and is still the seat of the Municipality. The Palazzo is also home of the Torre del Mangia (Bell Tower), which offers fantastic views of the city. The other main attractions include the green and white striped Duomo (Cathedral), Piccolomini Library and the Museo dell'Opera Metropolitiana. Also Siena has many churches; Basilica dell'Osservanza, Santa Maria dei Servi, San Domenico, San Francesco, Santo Spirito, San Martino, Sanctuary of Santa Caterina, and many patrician villas attributed to Baldassarre Peruzzi; Villa Chigi, Castle of Belcaro, Villa Celsa, Villa Cetinale and Villa Volte Alte.
