Spoleto

Spoleto is a quiet and peaceful ancient city for most of the year. However, each year during June and July, Spolato comes to life with the Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds). The festival has developed into one of the most important cultural manifestations in Italy, with a three-week schedule of music, theater and dance performances. For some time it became a reference point for modern sculpture exhibits, and works of art left to the city by Alexander Calder and others are a testimony to this. Top sights in Spoleto include Pinacoteca art museum, a Roman theatre, two Roman arches (Arco Romano and Arco di Druso), Rocca Papal fortress and the Ponte delle Torri. Spoleto also has many beautiful churches, including Duomo of S. Maria Assunta, San Pietro extra Moenia, The basilica of San Salvatore, San Ponziano, Santa Maria della Manna d'Oro, San Domenico, San Gregorio Maggiore, the former church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Santa Eufemia, San Paolo inter vineas, San Nicolò, Santa Maria della Misericordia, San Filippo Neri and Sant'Ansano.
