About Doge's Palace

Being the ducal residence, the palace once housed political institutions of the Republic of Venice until the Napoleonic occupation of the city in 1797. In these historic times, Venice was ruled by the aristocratic elite and principal function of Doge's Palace was to provide a space for the government to carry out its civic responsibilities to the people. The Doge did, in fact, reside in the palace; however, he held no real power and was very much just a representative figurehead for the Republic. Today, the building is preserved as a museum.
